Hi. My Norton Antivirus 2007 is going to be running out soon. I have always been able to get it free with rebate. Last year I paid $40 for it at Staples, but received $20 mail in rebate and a $20 upgrade rebate.

Does anyone know where I can get it free with rebate? Staples has a $20 mail in rebate but it will still cost me $20. I would like to be able to get it free again if possible.

Any ideas?
Thanks!!!!

Not that I will be much help but due to the raising costs of programming I'm not sure you will find it "free" anymore. You might find a match from a store (rebate plus instant savings) they are getting fewer and further between.

But what concerns me is you are just buying the AntiVirus. If you are online a lot and do anything including online banking and purchases, you really need to upgrade to Norton Internet Security with AntiVirus. I just did but now that I have seen Norton 360, I wish I had purchased that instead but that's just me.

When you purchase the box, it's good for up to 3 computer systems. So if you have more than one (I have 3 personally, 2 PC and 1 MAC but I have to buy a different version for the MAC) you don't need to purchase another box if they are all the same kind. (See PC Vs. MAC) I paid $79.99 for my PC box without rebates. But in all honesty, I will pay it with or without rebates simply because I know what it will cost someone to have their system restored in the event of an attack. I know that's not an option for everyone but my motto is better safe than offline for more than a day not on purpose. (Silly motto, eh?)

You can find out more about the different choices in product from Norton here http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/Disp...37500/ThemeID.106300

Thanks Queen Shari. I did find the Norton Antivirus 2008 at Staples yesterday for 39.99 plus a $20 rebate. They said if they offer a better rebate within 2 weeks, I can return it and they would re=ring it. I'll just wait to do my rebate until I see if it's going cheaper. I only buy from ebay and I use paypal for that, so I NEVER use a credit card online.

Is anyone even trying to catch these people who send viruses? Don't they leave a trail? Also, what are they getting out of it anyway? I think it's ridiculous that you have to purchase antivirus stuff.

Most of the hackers that create the virus's and break into systems do it for the thrill of saying "I did it!". While most of them can eventually be traced, they are smart enough to stay one step ahead of the trackers.

Believe it or not there are hacker clubs around the world. What do they get out of it? Kudo's from their partners in crime, fame in their circles, the thrill of knowing they are better than the rest, you name it. Sort of like beating City Hall, you get an rush knowing you won.

While company's like Norton and McAfee do their best to stay ahead of them and solve the virus's as they pop up, the best protect is self-protection. Got an email from someone you don't know with an attachment? Don't open the attachment! That is where the virus, trojan, worm live. Keep your DAT files up to date. Those are the files that update your antivirus program. Just be aware of anything and everything involving your computer and be safe rather than sorry.

Also, just make it a general rule, back-up your files! (Since I have been there, done that more than I want to admit to) Programs can always be reloaded into a system. Lose your files, they are gone forever without a back-up system. Go buy an external hard drive large enough to copy every file on your current hard drive. Usually a 250 GB external will do the job nicely. Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, Iomega, SimpleTech or others, go get one and back-up regularly! Check your local retailer (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, who ever you use) and talk to the techs. They will help you determine the best solution for your needs.

If a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book and replicates itself and sends itself to everyone in your address book, sending infected emails to all your friends and associates.

This following method won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has gotten into your system.

First, open your address book and click on "new contact" (or new card) just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses.

In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in: 000_ (that's 3 zeroes followed by an underline). In the window below where it prompts you to enter the new email address, type in:

WormAlert@alert.com (If it tells you this is not a valid address just say yes to add it, or click OK). Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, OK, etc.

Now, here's what you've done and why it works the "name" 000_ will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it tries to send itself to 000_ it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered (WormAlert@alert.com). If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

The advantage of this method is, if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your Inbox very quickly. If you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert@alert.com could not be delivered, you know right away that a worm has infected your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it!

I have the Norton 360 and I hate it!!! It has slowed down my system terribly! I am using DSL. It scans every website I visit...(I don't surf the web much, I mostly go to sites I have been to before...ebay mostly) It doesn't fix or remove tracking cookies, you have to remove them manually. Norton Antivirus removed them and 'fixed' problems it found. When this 360 expires, I am going back to the Antivirus!

I'm sure glad I didn't waste the extra money then to buy Norton 360. After I installed the Norton regular version a couple of days ago, it seemed like my computer was running a lot slower than normal (it's slow anyway since I'm on dial up).

It's pretty bad when we have to spend money every year just to keep these nasty things off our internet! My dad thinks that the companies who sell the antivirus are putting these viruses on. That would be terrible if that was true...
