SB can be expensive and addictive, but it does not have to be. I have been SB for more than 10 years and have spent quite a bit of money--but it's my passion. That's what I do. However, to get started--all you really need is paper (solids for sure, patterns are optional), paper trimmer, adhesive and a good pair of scissors. ANYTHING ELSE is strictly up to you. I do alot of paper piecing and color blocking--because it's fast, and it's inexpensive. And I use stickers.

I too got into this & like it , but find it overwhelming & time comsuming. Some local SB stores have 12 hr. crop & swaps w/ snacks , drawings, music etc.-for a min. fee. Churches for free! I also found great deals @ BIG LOTs, rummage sales, flea markets, but agree that you shouldn't buy too much ahead...I try to do a theme IE Frowner 1st tooth-braces), DOG YEARS, WHEELZ, BOO BOOS, not so much X-mas 1999, 2000,2001 etc. You would have to build an extra room to store them! Also there are huge 3-ring binders CHEAP in the office supplie section of SAms which work good too- & cheaper. Have Fun!

When I was first starting out I used 50% off coupons for places like Michaels (craft store) and Joann's (or joanns.com)- if the item was on sale it was half off the regular price which still was often less than the sale price. I invested in a sticker maker that uses acid free archival safe cover and buy the supplies always when on sale and with a coupon. Its easy and fun to make cute stickers from catalog and magazine pictures. Coupons for these places are usually in local newspaper flyers or google it for online codes. I also belong to a freecyle group (join a local one at freecycle.org.) The group is to help keep things out of the landfills and often people moving or doing spring cleaning just want the stuff gone. I've received scrapbooking magazines, fancy scissors, and cardstock from freecycle members. Join a local scrapbooking group or start one and share tools and swap supplies. Besides it's fun to do it with others and brainstorm ideas. Our local library has a group, check and see if your's does. And while you are there check out scrapbooking books for ideas and tips. If you have a Big Lots or Odd Lots or other closeout store nearby see if they have a scrapbooking section. Our Big Lots has some great things very reasonable and they occasionally have 20% customer appreciation so I stock up then. I'm a bargain hunter and can't pass up a great scrapbooking sale. I now have a room dedicated for crafts and most of it is shelves of scrapbooking supplies gotten either free or very cheaply from watching sales and using coupons both at real stores and online.

A good way to help with the cost is to use the cards given to you at the time the pictures were taken if you saved them. Cut out the front showing the occasion or the year of the birthday, etc and include that on the page. It is great to include stickers or stamps from any craft store where you can find discounted stamps after the holidays. Good luck and have fun, use your imagination and you will make your pages shine!!

I was also going to suggest Big Lots..they have a lot of good things in their craft department. You may also want to invest in an acid-free testing pen just to test scraps that you might want to use.

Wal-Mart also has some good solid papers in variety packs which could make the process easier. Keep in mind your local library for books on the topic as well. Plus you can utilize your scanner for photos that you might want to use out of books, magazines, etc. which can cut your cost.

hi,fellow scrappers! here are some suggestions for how to get more info. go to scrapbooking parties or try these sites. creativememories.com,stampinup.com,closetomyheart.com. frequent local craft stores.michaels and joanns have 40-50% off coupons in sun. issue of st pete times every 2wks. and tampa tribune on sundays sometimes. signup for newsletters from craft stores.also bhg.com,creating keepsakes.com,ivycottagecreations.com,scrapbookingabout.com (for convention info.) and 1 last thing-go to kashnkarry or target and save 10%off the coverprice of magazines or look for them in your public library.you might be able to check them out for free. if you're not familliar with computers you can take free classes at most libraries now. even get a free email address here in pinellas county,fl. or ask librarian for the internet for dummies book. i highly recommend thier classes.very enjoyable and easy to follow along. here we have group as well as individual classes. i have never regretted it.

I "hit the jackpot" last year when the Dollar Tree had those paper containers in my area. I sorted my papers by theme, color, brand and events. I had so much fun. I need more, looks like I have to go shopping again...LOL

Frowner

So why doesn't any more of you post out there?
I get the daily digest and see that no one is posting anything about scrapbooking.
You can get the sale paper sent to you via email from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. I keep one word document set up to copy and paste the bi-weekly coupon from lots of different places.

Anyone out there have good ideas to share?

OK, summer fun is winding down, and scrapbook season is starting for me. I spent the summer buying scrapbook clearance items, pretty papers, making pictures, and now it's time to put them all together.

Time to join the local classes, and get together with friends to see what everyone else did over the summer. We share memories, thoughts, and ideas on how to make our pages look the best they can be. We also share our supplies, now that is a good friend...LOL

Scrapbooking is a lot of fun. There are many ideas out there for setting up your scrapbook. I like to make handmade cards also. I find that going to www.splitcoaststampers.com, offers many ideas on making cards, scrapbooks, journals, decorated cans etc. The ideas are out there. There are even calendars that will help you organize a scrapbook in a years time.

4 of us just returned from a girls weekend away scrapbooking in new hampshire (at a friends house). One of my friends have the most beautiful albums and what she does is looks for ideas online (search "scrapbook pages baseball" for example) and copies them! A lot of people post their favorite pages they have done online and they make great ideas!

To organize my pictures I buy those cheap plastic photo albums and put all my pictures in them and the cutely decorated card board in the front pulls out so you can write on the top left side labeling exactly what photos are in the album. Multiple albums fit perfectly in the picture boxes and you don't have to worry about them bending and it makes flipping easy when your looking for that special picture for your scrapbook. I separate my photos into categorizes Ex: I put all pics of just me together in one album or however many it takes, then my husband, then both of us, my dogs, trips, scenery, family, and friends. I know exactly where to look for the right pic. Hope this helps others to need help organizing there pictures. Happy Thanksgiving!
