I was eating a Subway sandwich last week and the last bite (wouldn't you know it!) dripped some light mayo on my fav. Old Navy t-shirt (it's a coral color). I sprayed some Tide super spray (??) on it and washed it, but the stain is still there. I thought I had gotten it out, so I threw it in the dryer. What can I put on it to get it out?
Help!! Lori |

Hi Lori,
I hope this works and this post helps others, too! I found this link @howstuffworks.com and it covers how to remove mayo from MANY surfaces. Being from Old Navy, I'm betting yours is cotton or rayon, but I'll just post the link for all. http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to-remove-mayonnaise-stains.htm |

Thanks, but I have already washed and dried it once. The site you gave me is for treating the stain immediately after it happens. Would Oxy Clean work? My shirt is 100% cotton. I hate to spend the money to have it dry cleaned. Why does mayo stain so bad? It's frustrating!! I'm going to start wearing black!
Any other ideas? Lori |

Go to the grocery store and purchase CARBONA. They are in small YELLOW bottles. They have specific formulas for ALL stains. I have NEVER had a stain that Carbona could NOT remove. They even have one for red wine...and it works.

Hi Lori,
Try "Greased Lightning" you can buy it at Dollar General, WalMart probably K-Mart too. I use it to remove grease based stains from clothing and carpets it works fabulous on wine stains too. Good Luck! - K |

Lori if you wash and dry the shirt and the stain is still there,it's going to be hard to remove now. Stains have to be treated before washing and drying. Your best bet is to wash the shirt in color clorax and see if that lifts the stain off.

Mayo stains because it is made from eggs and oils. The worst thing to do is to dry something that has a stain on it. That only sets the stain making it almost impossible to get out.
Try some of the products that the other posters have suggested. I have never used them before but it is worth a try! I also have had my favorite shirt/top ruined by a stain. Usually I try to find another one to replace it. |

The best products that I've found that really work on most stains is "Shout Ultra Gel" (white bottle w/ orange scrubber attatchment)and "Shout Gel Advanced" (blue spray bottle). I have had excellent results with both products!

Good news everyone! I got the stain out finally! I talked to a lady at one of our dry cleaners and she gave me a tip. I rubbed some Dawn dish soap into the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I threw it back in the washer with Tide detergent (liquid) and added some Oxy Clean (powder) to the load. So I blasted the stain out of there!!!!
Thanks everyone for your tips! I'm going to be really careful now when I eat anything with mayo in it! I know I could have bought another Tshirt, but I have my favorites and you can't just find any tshirt that you really like sometimes. Have a good weekend. Lori |

Mayo is a grease type stain. Put a good amount of corn starch or baby powder on the stain. For some reason grease stains look like the bind to the fabric, they just sit there and look bad. Let it sit overnight. Spray the corn starch or baby powder with Shout Advanced or Zout and then wash. It should remove the stain. I have taken stains of last summers clothing with this before. It removes old grease stains as well.

I found a terrific product called Goo Gone available widely that works wonders on both oil and tomato stains. Even if the item has been washed. I apply with a large fat q-tip or cotton ball to saturate, wait a minute or two and wash regularly. It is amazing. I am a slob and boy does it come in handy. I've attacked really old stains with this stuff and gotten stains out. Worth the try.

My mother always used talcum powder on grease stains, sprinkle, rub into and launder.

Sometimes (in a pinch) with most stains (and depending on the fabric), if you're not at home and can't rinse the garment, try a "wet-nap" - the kind you get at a chicken wing place - it'll usually get most of the stain out - good luck!

Well I have used many stain removers and an old favorite our Grandparents used Fels-Naptha bar
it is a brown bar and you follow the directions on the package. It has many uses but I gave one to my daughter for college all the girls in dorm wanted to know what that was so she showed them and they all come and borrow the bar to treat stains old and new alike. It is made by Dial your talking college kids pizza oil, ketchup etc mayo mustard and god knows what else for next year i bought her a few bars to share. It is cheap and lasts forever. |

I did the same thing, I used a Tide spot stick washed and dried and the mark was still there. I used spray Oxi-Clean and re-washed with everything else and it came out. I also used Xtra Detergent, don't know which one worked, but it came out.
